Dates: Wednesday 22nd June – Sunday 26th June 2016
Venue: Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA
NEW FOR 2016!
This year, we have changed and developed our timetable to give you the best learning experience we can. The school will run from Wednesday – Sunday, with three full days of tuition, followed by 2 days of workshops and competition.
Two Study Options!
From Wednesday through to Friday students will be taught in small groups of similar ability. These lessons will focus on developing technique, phrasing, expression, tempo and general good practice.
On Saturday and Sunday the emphasis will change to a menu of workshops to explore a range of topics. This will allow students the opportunity to tailor the weekend activities to their own specific needs and interests.
You can study for the full 5 Days, with the full choice of classes, practice, workshops and expertise. Or if you can only attend for the weekend, join us on Saturday and Sunday where you can attend just the workshop part of the school.
Offering the weekend workshop programme will allow for weekend only students to attend and fit in seamlessly to groups, offering greater flexibility in the programme and hopefully make the school accessible to those with working arrangements which are less flexible.
The full course price will cover students for Lessons and Workshops and other events from Wednesday until Sunday. Weekend workshop only students will pay by the workshop or a package price for six workshops. Find out more on our booking form
More about the school
We welcome all levels of player but if you are a beginner we recommend that bring/ buy in advance a copy of The National Piping Centre’s Tutor Book, this can be done on-line from the National Piping Centre shop. We also encourage all students to bring recording equipment to classes although CD’s of all the tunes in the music book will be available to purchase. Drummers will work on scores given to them by them by our two top class snare and tenor drumming tutors.
This year the piping teachers could not be better. They are confirmed as Captain (Retired) Stuart D Samson MBE, Piping Instructor (BA Scottish Music Degree Course) and former Director of Army Bagpipe Music, John Mulhearn, successful solo piper and recording artist, and National Piping Centre instructor, Matt MacIsaac, Silver Medallist at the Argyllshire Gathering and successful composer and touring musician, and Willie McCallum, the record holding 8 time overall Glenfiddich Solo Piping Champion and creator of the McC2 Chanter.
The 2016 Shenandoah Valley Festival of Piping and Drumming is kindly sponsored by R.G Hardie & Co. who have donated a set of PH01 Celtic bagpipes valued at £1000. They will be awarded to a deserving individual who has shown dedication and improvement during the week .
