Background: Born and brought up in Timaru, New Zealand, Murray is one of the most successful competing pipers of the last half century. He was taught initially by his father, and then by the great New Zealand player Donald Bain. He moved to Scotland in 1973 and was taught by Bob Nicol. He now runs his own pipe-making business, Strathmore Bagpipes.
