Background: Robert Kilgour was born in Edinburgh in 1924. He was taught piping as a teenager and joined the Scots Guards as a Piper in 1944, rising to the rank of Pipe Major before leaving the Army in 1966. After a spell in the Civil Service, he moved to Denmark and was an influential figure in the development of piping in that country.
