Top Tips: How to Remember your Wedding Day
Ask any married couple and they’ll tell you – your wedding day goes by in a flash! While waiting for your wedding day can feel like it’s taking an eternity, the reality is that time will go very quickly on the big day itself, just when you most want it to slow down. For the savvy couple planning their nuptials, it’s worth thinking about how you’ll remember your day in advance of celebrating to ensure your memories last a lifetime. Here’s our guide...
Photography
The ultimate wedding day aide-memoire, high-quality photographs will take you right back to the moment for years to come, making hiring a wedding photographer absolutely essential if you want to remember the various details of your day. Be sure to hire a professional – whilst it may be tempting to ask a family friend with a keen interest in photography to take your pictures, someone who makes their living from this will specialise in capturing the moment as you want to remember it. They’ll be in the right place at the right time to capture the key moments of your day, and their specialised kit will ensure that the photos turn out perfectly for you. If you can remember the sensation of feeling you’ve captured a perfect Kodak moment, only for the photo to turn out too dark, over-exposed or splodgey once developed, you’ll understand the importance of this.
As well as the traditional wedding photographer, many couples are opting to capture their day through video, and alternative photographic means. While video can be expensive, it can capture aspects your day better than photography. If remembering the words from your vows, the speech of your best man, or the movements of your dress or the dancefloor are important to you, then video could well be the way to go.
For more fun photographs, you could also choose to have a photo booth. Throw in some fun props after a couple of drinks, and you may even capture a side of normally camera-shy guests that you’ll look fondly on for years to come. Whether you go for a DIY option using an instant camera and homemade backdrop or choose to hire a professional photobooth, the pictures taken can also offer a glimpse of moments from your day that you wouldn’t otherwise get to see. If you are hiring a booth, try to find one that will print two copies of the photos – this way your guests can keep one, for the other to go in you guest book – or one that saves all of the photos taken during the day for you to download later.
Keepsakes
Just as you hand out wedding favours to help guests remember your day, feel free to give yourself little souvenirs from your wedding day! Flowers can be expensive - and it seems such a shame to spend so much money, only for the flowers to be discarded after carriages. As such, there is a growing trend for brides to dry the flowers from their bouquet and have them framed for hanging at home. Your florist should be able to recommend someone to help you with this, if they’re not able to provide the service themselves.
The traditional guestbook is another great keepsake. While some guests may be having too much fun on the dancefloor to remember to sign it, the messages from those who do will be something you cherish forever. One fun alternative to the classic guestbook we’ve seen is to ask guests to sign a jenga piece with their message for you – allowing you to build memories for years to come!
Indulge your senses
Your sense of smell is incredibly powerful at triggering memories. We love the idea of brides carefully selecting a new or special perfume to wear on their wedding day: a quick spritz in the following years will automatically transport you back in time!
Be present in the moment
Our final piece of advice, and ultimately the most crucial, is to be present in the moment. You’ve spent months meticulously planning, so it’s only natural to get caught up in making sure every detail is perfect. Relax! Take time to consciously try and remember your surroundings – pick something distinctive and take in all the details so you can form more vivid memories. Absorb all of the colours in your bouquet; view the faces of all your guests smiling; savour the taste of your wedding breakfast, or the champagne during your first toast. And, most importantly, make sure you take a lingering look at your partner’s face during your vows, for a memory you’re sure to cherish forever.
