Top Tips for Writing Your Wedding Vows
Wedding vows are an essential and very personal touch to any wedding ceremony. Whilst some couples opt for the more traditional vows, many couples in Scotland and globally are now writing their own.

Now while we canât give you a step-by-step plan on what to write, we can give you our quick top tips to make that writing a wee bit easier.
Â
- Start writing early
Donât leave it until the day of the wedding, or even the night before, this will add an unnecessary stress for everyone involved! Make a start with some short bullet points which can be developed later, this helps to channel your initial ideas.
Â
- Discuss vows with your partner
You donât want to end up writing a novel when your partner might write two sentences! Discuss how long the vows will be, any particular points to mention, or things they may want to avoid. Itâs always better to be clear and have any worries clarified.
Â
- Do some research
Finding some examples can be a big help to that annoying writerâs block. You can find some points which may be applicable to your partner or your relationship, or find some inspiration and that push to writing your own.
Â
- Take a break
The average human can only concentrate for 40-50 minutes at a time. Donât try and overdo it, this will only make things harder. Go for a walk, practise your pipes, have a cuppa â anything to get away from the pen and paperâŠor laptop.
Â
- Ask someone to proof-read
Not that spelling is particularly important for this, but it always helps to get someone else to have a look at what youâve written. They may be able to help you re-write it, or think of substitute words etc. Make sure itâs someone you trust though!
Â
- Try adding some humour
Not that you need to be a stand-up comedian during your wedding but we Scots love a laugh, so adding some light humour or a gentle joke can help relieve some nerves. It can also relax the atmosphere for your guests and create memories.
Â
- Surround yourself with memories of your relationship
Set aside some time and find some photos of you and your partner, put on some music that your partner enjoys, or similar! This will let you really reflect on the person youâre writing your vows about, and allow you to focus too.
