Specialist Evening Classes
The National Piping Centre have developed three different evening class courses as part of our curriculum.
The Current Term of Evening Classes is our Spring Term which starts: Monday 25th April - Thursday 30th June 2022. Registrations are now closed for this term.
The next term of evening classes will start from Mon 26th Sept - Thurs 1st December 2022.

Bellows Piping
This replaces the Bellows piping course which used to run at The National Piping Centre Otago Street. This will run in two hour slots, one from Novice players and one for Intermediate players. The novice course will be based around the basics of playing a bellows pipe and an introduction to session tunes. The Intermidiate+ course will look more at repertoire, form and tune delivery.
The teacher for this course will be Ailis Sutherland. Ailis has a first class honours degree in Applied Music from University of Highlands and Islands, where she studied at their South Uist campus. She has performaed all over the world as a solo piper and with her group Hecla, as well as appearing on radio and television.
These courses will be weekly on Tuesdays from 25th January 2022 - Tuesday 29th March 2022. The Novice class will be at 6pm and the Intermediate+ course will be at 7pm, with lessons lasting 50mins.
Whistle
In a brand new course, with a top whistle player, beginners novice and intermediate+ players can learn more about the craft and music of the whistle. The beginner course is for those with no experience, the Novice course is for those who can play basic scales and simple tunes, with the Intermediate+ course for those looking to work on their repertoire and delivery.
This course will be taught by Ross Ainslie. Ross is a renowned instrumentalist having played and recorded with some of the top traditional music groups and as a solo player over the last ten years. He is a BBC Radio 2 Folk Music Award winner and we are delighted to have him teaching this course.
These courses will be weekly on Tuesdays from 25th January 2022 - Tuesday 29th March 2022. The Beginner classes will be at 6pm, the Novice class will be at 7pm and the Intermediate+ course will be at 8pm, with lessons lasting 50mins.
Piobaireachd 101
This 10 week course will follow the NPC Piobaireachd Tutor book to introduce non piobaireachd players to this musical artform. To take part in this course you will need a copy of TNPC Piobaireachd Tutor book.
Piobaireachd 101 will be tought by Dan Nevans. Dan is a competing solo piper, with a degree in Applied Music, and many years experience in playing and teaching. In the summer of 2021, Dan release his first book titled "Piobaireachd is for Everyone" reflecting his love of this music.
This courses will be weekly on Mondays from 24th January 2022 - Monday 28th March 2022 at 7pm each week.
Fees
These 10 week courses are ÂŁ100 for each course.
We can take registrations once the course has started, however the full 10 week price will still apply. We can only take new registrations until week 2 of the new course.

Hearing Protection
The National Piping Centre requires all students to use hearing protection at all times when playing pipes. Hearing protection is available for purchase in our shop or free of charge from the earplug dispenser in both our piping school venues.Â
