Pipes and Drums In Schools Forum & Workshop 2021
The Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust and The National Piping Centre welcome you to the Pipes and Drums In Schools Forum and Workshop 2021. Join us at The National Piping Centre Otago Street on Thursday 2nd December from 9.30am - 4.30pm for a fantastic day of workshops, tailored for teachers.
This in-service day will provide a platform for instructors and people interested in schools tuition and pipe band development to meet and collaborate on different piping and drumming topics. The timetable will be announced shortly, but here is an overview of the sessions that will take place over the day.
Supporting Pupils from Disadvantaged Backgrounds
Presented by: Peter Nicholson, Director of Music, Sistema Scotland/ Big Noise and Iain Watson, Chair of the Govan Schools and Community Pipe Band
This session discusses how tutors can support pupils who are disadvantaged, including signs to look out for and practical steps that can be taken to help them on their pipes or drums journey.
Motivational Techniques
Presented by: Dr Fiona McConnochie MA, PhD, Dip Ed, CPsychol (BPS) · Specialist Consultant/Director in Sport & Performance Psychology
It has been challenging to motivate and retain pupils during the pandemic, and with ongoing restrictions even the most enthusiastic pupils can be fatigued. Many are still learning online only. This session takes a fresh look at how to motivate young learners through the lens of sports psychology.
Handling pipes and drums, and managing group practice, in Covid
Presented by: Dr Peter McCalister, practicing GP and 2018 Northern Meeting Gol d Medallist.
This session shares some of the latest science about playing and handling the pipes and drums in Covid and, through group discussion, shares the different approaches that colleagues are taking to keep tuition and band practice safe.
Tech to support admin time
This short session invites delegates to discuss in small groups the use tech and apps that they use to support band and tuition administration. Recommendations will be brought back to the wider group for sharing.
Curriculum for Excellence
Presented by: Ross Cowan, Donald MacPhee and a Drumming Assessor tbc.
This session will give an update and review of playing requirements for SQA examinations.
PDQB – online and the new drumming syllabus
Presented by: Wilson Brown , NPC Piping Instructor
This session will present an update and review of the Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board examinations, including online exams and the updated drumming syllabus.
HND – a new course for pipers and snare drummers
Presented by: Derek Doyle, The National Piping Centre HN programme Course Co-ordinator
This session will provide an overview on the HNC and recently approved HND programme for piping and snare drumming.

COVID-19 Mitigations
This event will adhere to all government guidelines, including wearing face coverings (unless medically exempt), check in with NHS protect for track and trace, use of hand sanitiser and hand washing facilities in the building. We would recommend all in person attendees take a lateral flow test before attending, and only attend if a negative result is returned.
