About Me... and Him
Hi there,
I’m Helen, The National Piping Centre’s Marketing Officer, which basically means I get to help you all find out about this beautiful venue and the work we do with Scotland’s national instrument… we know it’s a bit of a hidden gem!
But more exciting than that I just got engaged! Darach is a piper (surprise!) and we live in the East End of Glasgow, although I am originally from Inveraray and he is from Kyle of Lochalsh. We met at a work night out (The National Piping Centre has a lot to answer for) nearly 10 years ago so we have taken our time to get to this point!
It was just after Christmas (28th December 2016 to be exact) that he finally let his inner romantic out. We had arrived in Kyle for second Christmas, when he suggested driving to the Fairy Pools in Carbost, Skye. Legend has it that if a piper dips his chanter into the Fairy Pools he will be successful in the next year, so on this premise, bagpipes and all, we walked to them in a beautiful glen in the middle of nowhere. However it was the middle of December so there was, admittedly, some mild moaning about being wet and cold. But all was forgiven when after a quick tune for the fairy from him, he popped the question in the most beautiful spot, with a ring he had chosen himself.
Left to Right: Fairy Pools in Carbost, Skye; Helen and Darach after he popped the question; and Darach plays a a quick tune.
In answer to the two questions I have been asked most – No, I had no idea it was going to happen and Yes, I really do love the ring he chose!
So now with wedding planning in full swing I get to be the resident Bridezilla… err… Bride Blogger for The National Piping Centre’s new wedding blog. When I’m not being social media guru for The National Piping Centre, I love running (Im up to 6 marathons, so I apologise now for any running analogies that might creep in), I bake a bit (Mary Berry has a lot to answer for), and I have just got my first sewing machine, but no I’m definitely not making my own dress! So come join me on my – sorry, our – big new adventure.
