Top Tips: When Things Don't Go to Plan...
This weekâs wedding news included the story of a woman whose beach wedding was ruined by a storm, until a total stranger saved the day by offering to host the wedding in her beachfront home. There have also been stories of an owl ringbearer that caused chaos at a wedding after turning on a groomsman once heâd delivered the rings, and the sunbather in Adelaide who didnât move as a wedding took place next to her. It got us thinking â how do you deal with it when things donât quite go to plan?
Issue 1: Someoneâs running late
No matter how organised you and your friends are, sometimes life gets in the way and things run a little later than planned. Whether itâs a crisis with childcare or unexpected traffic, itâs likely that one of your guests will end up being late to your wedding. However, if this happens to you, itâs important not to take it as a personal offence. If youâre worried, get a member of your bridal party to give them a call and figure out their estimated arrival time â and enjoy the day with them once they arrive!
Issue 2: Something happens during the ceremony
You rehearsed the ceremony, so everythingâs sure to be perfect, right? Not necessarily! Maybe the celebrant mispronounces a name, maybe one of the musicians hits the wrong note, maybe one of your flower girls gets a bit fidgety â these things happen. Such imperfections are a part of real life, and while you might have dreamt of your ceremony being perfect, the key is to enjoy your ceremony for what it is rather than what you thought it might be. After all, these are the moments that youâll look back on and smile at for years to come.
Issue 3: One of your guests no-shows
Youâve spent months sending invites, gathering RSVPS and chasing replies, so you know exactly whoâll be there on your big day. That is, until someone doesnât show up, despite having promised you theyâd be there. Alas, this happens more commonly than youâd think, so try not to worry about it! Ask a member of your bridal party to let the venue manager or caterer know, and theyâll easily be able to accommodate the change.
Issue 4: The weather takes a turnâŠ
When it comes to the weather, itâs best to be prepared for all eventualities, as itâs the one thing you wonât be able to control. Stock up on large umbrellas and wellington boots; order some blankets, and pick up a fan or two in case the temperature skyrockets. These items will help people feel comfortable in the event of extreme weather, allowing them to get on with enjoying the celebrations!
Issue 5: Something embarrassing happens
Itâs almost inevitable â put all of your favourite people together in a room with a reason to celebrate, add some alcohol, and someone is likely to get carried away. But assuming nothing catastrophic happens, itâs best to try and laugh these things off! Your attitude will set the tone for the day, so if you smile through any hiccups, your guests will laugh along with you; if not theyâre likely to sense that youâre uncomfortable, putting a dampener on the day.
