NYPBS Ensembles
The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland is a dynamic performance and development programme for young pipers and drummers from across the country. Run by the National Piping Centre, NYPBS offers a creative and inclusive environment where talented young musicians (aged 10-25) can connect, collaborate, and shine.
Members are supported by leading tutors and professional musicians through workshops, rehearsals, and high-profile performances across Scotland and beyond. More than a band, NYPBS is a platform for creativity, leadership, and musical excellence – and a place where lifelong friendships and skills are formed.
With multiple ensembles tailored to different ages and stages, NYPBS welcomes young players from all backgrounds. Entry is by audition, but our focus is always on potential, passion and the opportunity to grow. We believe the future of piping is diverse, vibrant and full of possibility – and NYPBS is where that future takes shape.
Grow With The NYPBS
The NYPBS is a key part of the NPC learning pathway for young pipers and drummers. Lead by Steven Blake (NYPBS Director) and David Shedden (NYPBS Producer) the NYPBS continues to set the standard for national arts programmes in Scotland.
The NYPBS programme delivery is supported by world class freelance tutors and the NPC’s Trainee Tutor Programme.
Each ensemble is built to challenge and support you, wherever you are in your development. We match players to the band that best suits their current level, potential, and goals, and many participants move through multiple bands over time.
Meet The Bands
NYPBS Senior Band
Our Senior Band is the flagship ensemble of NYPBS, and entry requires near-flawless fundamental technique. The NYPBS Senior Band brings together some of the country’s elite young players to broaden their experience and explore what is possible in a concert pipe band ensemble..
This band is made up of talented musicians who have played in some of the best adult bands in the world, as well as members of local community bands. They come together in a space where they are free from any affiliations and can enjoy making innovative new music in professional concert settings. This ensemble is for high-level young musicians who want to be challenged, take risks, and perform with real musicality.
Meet The Bands
NYPBS Development Band
Our Development Band is usually the largest of our ensembles – and for good reason. It brings together a wide range of young musicians who are all committed to developing their technique and growing as ensemble players.
This ensemble creates a space for participants to expand their musical experience and truly master the fundamentals of band craft and control over their instruments.
The standard here is high, and everyone is working hard on different aspects of their playing. It’s a brilliant space to broaden your skills, learn from peers, and take on music that’s both challenging and rewarding.
The NYPBS Development Band offers young pipers and drummers world-class training opportunities while working on repertoire that is utterly distinct from the competition genre. This is where many players really find their stride.
Meet The Bands
NYPBS Junior Band
Our Junior Band is the entry point to NYPBS, and it’s currently open to pipers only. It’s our youngest group, designed for players who are just beginning their journey.
This is a space to build confidence, explore new music, and develop solid foundations in a fun, encouraging environment. No competition experience or grades required – just curiosity and a willingness to learn.
