How to... Book a Venue Overseas
Recently, we have had a number of enquiries from couples based overseas, who are looking for a truly Scottish wedding venue. But getting married in a different country can have a number of extra decisions and legalities, on top of the normal wedding venue decisions. So read on here for our guide to getting married in Scotland if you are based overseas
Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions of your day. Our blog here about choosing your venue can help you navigate the major factors to help you get the most out of venue showrounds. Choosing it if you are based overseas can be even harder, but here are some things to consider:
Have a detailed vision of what you want
We have had couples send a parent or best friend to look at the venue to help them make their choice. This is a great idea as it gives you the opinion of a trusted person, who has been in and can see what there is on offer. However, make sure that they fully understand your brief for the venue, things such as your decoration choices, your guest numbers, your meal preferences, as this all impacts upon what a venue can offer. If they envision something else for your big day, you could end up with a venue that's right for what they want, and not what you need.
Incorporate your traditions
If you are coming from overseas to Scotland, you could choose to blend some traditions together, to combine your home country with your chosen wedding venue traditions. This could include colour scheme, choice of favours or even readings or blessings in your home country's language as well as Scottish Gaelic. There are so many ways to incorporate different traditions into weddings, that will help make the day unique to you as a couple.
Legalities
Make sure you understand the legalities of the country you are getting married in, as well as the country where you reside, to ensure that the marriage is valid. You can find out more about getting married in Glagow at the Glasgow City Council website here.
Staying Longer
If you are coming from abroad, with a group of people, you may want to check hotel availability around the dates of your wedding. Most weddings only stay the night before, but with flights etc, you may want to consider a longer break. You could combine a group trip with a honeymoon after the ceremony too. Check with your venue if they have rooms or any partner hotels who may accommodate larger groups, if your venue only has a few rooms like at The Pipers' Tryst Hotel.
Ask your Wedding Planner
Whne planning a wedding abroad, it is important to have a great relationship with your venue and their team. These wedding coordinators will talk you through every step of the day, but they can also provide advice on local services for florists, DJs etc, or about how you can incorporate traditions into the day. They will be more than happy to lead you through the process.
